FUTSAL Winter 2008

Fut what? FUTSAL! Futsal is a form of indoor soccer which was developed in South America. The word futsal was derived from the Portuguese phase futebol de salao or the Spanish phase futbol sala/ de salón which, basically translates to indoor soccer.  Futsal’s roots extend back to 1930, the inaugural year of the World Cup. Futsal first appeared on the scene in Montevideo Uruguay and San Paulo, Brazil. Futsal is played on a hard surface with lines as boundaries, instead of nets or boards like some indoor soccer. There are 5 players on the court for each team, including the keeper.  If a ball goes out of bounds on the side line, it is put back into play with a kick in. If the ball goes out of bounds over the goal line, the ball goes to the keeper and it is distributed back into play from the keeper’s hands. The ball used in futsal is weighted and smaller than a regular ball – referred to as a futsal ball. Some popular international players such as Rohaldiniho and Ranaldo started their soccer careers on the futsal court. Futsal is a fast and exciting game which develops fundamentals foot skills and fosters creativity on and off the ball. WDMSC has been operating their own select futsal house league the past few winters. Futsal is a fun and great way to develop players and the WDMSC hopes that both the recreational and select leagues continue to grow as more and more players and coaches get involved.  If you have any questions concerning futsal please contact Ginger Parson at 515-229-5757 or wdmscfutsal@wdmsoccerclub.org
